Fire Breaks Out at Delhi’s Gaffar Market, 22 Fire Tenders Rushed to Karol Bagh

A fire at Puri Plaza in Delhi's Gaffar Market triggered a major emergency early Friday, prompting the deployment of 22 fire tenders. Police suspect mobile battery overcharging, while investigators await the cooling operation to establish the exact cause.

A major fire broke out at a shop in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area early Friday morning, triggering panic in the busy Gaffar Market. As many as 22 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control. The fire has now been extinguished, and no casualties have been reported so far.

The fire broke out at a shop in Puri Plaza, located in Chain Wali Gali of Gaffar Market. According to the Delhi Police, the preliminary investigation suggests that the fire originated at a mobile battery shop on the ground floor. Overcharging of batteries is suspected to have triggered the blaze. However, the exact cause of the fire will be established only after the cooling operation is completed.

The Fire Department received a call about the incident at 1:30 am. According to the latest information, the fire started in one shop before spreading to nearby establishments. Additional water tankers and lighting equipment were also dispatched to the site to support firefighting and rescue operations.

After the fire was brought under control, Deputy Chief Fire Officer M. K. Chattopadhyay shared details about the building and the challenges faced by firefighters.

He said, "The building does not have proper ventilation arrangements. There is only one staircase, and each floor has approximately 14-15 shops. We received a call at 1:30 am. The building has one basement, one ground floor and three upper floors (G + 3). The basement is safe. The fire broke out in one or two shops on the ground floor and then spread to the upper floors. The building housed shops selling mobile accessories and crockery. So far, we have received no information about anyone being injured or killed."

The building's limited ventilation, single staircase and concentration of shops across multiple floors posed challenges during the firefighting operation. While the blaze has been brought under control, the exact cause will be determined after the cooling operation is completed.
